The other side of our business is large-scale public sculpture design.
How, pray tell, does this relate to product design? Surprising to some,
the sculpture design process is similar and the deliverables are almost
identical. Sculpture informs our product design work precisely because
public sculpture requires a certain elegance and directness in
engineering approach. Artists like to build from our plans because of
the simplicity and completeness of our engineering solutions.
We love public sculpture because we get to show off our skills as engineers
and designers in a very public way.
We offer fixed-rate pricing for sculpture commissions based on total
project budget. We help in two stages: proposal and
engineering.
In the proposal stage, we take your napkin sketches or images of
your model and turn it into a solid model. We then create a 2d "pre-
engineering" document release, high-quality renderings, and videos of
your sculpture in action. The creation of the 3d model is an iterative
process and we are skilled at working with even the most visionary
artists.
In the engineering detail stage, we develop high-quality and complete
build drawings per your needs. Different sculptures need different things,
so we customize this stage to complement your skillset and requirements.
Because we love working with artists, and understand the realities of
the working artist finances, we offer these services in a fixed bid
manner. The proposal stage takes 3% of the total commission.
The engineering detail phase takes an additional 10% of the total
sculpture budget. These are numbers you can use in your proposal right
now. Of course, if you're doing something completely insane, let's talk
first! We can also provide by-the-hour consulting if that's what you desire.
